Thyme isn’t just a versatile kitchen herb – it looks great in the garden too. A low-growing evergreen shrub, it’s ideal for edging paths, and the clusters of tiny pink flowers in late spring are a magnet for pollinators. Thyme grows well in coastal areas and is ideal for rock gardens and containers as well as vegetable plots. The small aromatic leaves are a key ingredient in a wide range of dishes.
Sow indoors
Sow thinly in trays of firm pre-watered compost and cover with 0.5cm of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place in warmth, 15-20°C and keep moist at all times.
Plant out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2 to 3 weeks before planting out 30 cm apart, or in individual pots.
Tips
Regular picking will ensure fresh aromatic tasty new leaves.
